would love to know what the protocol is in Australia at a wedding. Is the grooms side expected to pay for a part of the reception or make any other kind of contribution?

I live in the US, but tradition says that the grooms family pays for the brides ring, flowers at the wedding, rehearsal dinner, minister or officiant. That's tradition; however; I think people mostly do what they want now a days. We did, we actually paid for half of our own wedding and my mom and dad (brides side) paid for the other half. The grooms side didn't pay for a single thing. So I think it's whatever now a days, atleast in the states
In Singapore, each side pays for their own weddings. If you want to combine and hold a wedding together, then it's half-half.
