Plus Size Beach Wedding Dresses

September 1st, 2010

beach wedding kiss

Having a destination wedding at the beach? Lucky you-the beach is a fabulous location for a wedding!

The gorgeous view, the relaxed locale, and a honeymoon destination that you don’t have to travel to because you’re already there…the only thing you have to do is find the perfect plus size beach wedding dress!

Honestly, it’s easy to find a suitable plus size wedding dress if you know what, and what not, to look for.

What To Look For

Find a dress that isn’t made of stiff and heavy material. Lighter materials that flow just look “beachier”. They’ll also breathe better, and that’s a very good thing since it’ll be hot.

Go for a dress that’s shorter, since you don’t want to be bothered with a skirt that drags along the sand and water. Unless you don’t mind, of course.

Choose something that is less formal, since the beach is naturally not a traditional place for a wedding. Something that looks great in a church will look out of place outside on the sand. You may want to check out non-wedding dresses, like cocktail dresses and bridesmaid dresses.

White or other lighter colors are best. Dark colors, like black and burgundy, won’t look and feel right when you’re on the beach in the hot sun.

Don’t forget to wear the right shoes! Treading on the sand in heels will make you look like a klutz, so stick with flat soles. Ballet flats, fancy slippers and even flip flops are better alternatives. You may even want to consider going barefoot!

Junior Bridesmaid Dresses

Forever Yours Junior Bridesmaid Dresses Style 710116

If your wedding entourage includes junior bridesmaids, be prepared to provide them with dresses that are different from the rest of your bridesmaids.

venus junior bridesmaid dress

Venus Junior Bridesmaid Dress Style JM4330

Junior means that they’re around 10 years old, although they can be as young as 8 or 9 and as old as 13 or 14. It’s an age range that makes them too young to be “real” bridesmaids and too mature to be flowergirls.

The best style of dress for them is something that would be perceived as trendy and fashionable, since they are at such an impressionable age. Think of an updated and youthful version of the style or color your
other bridesmaids are wearing. Dresses have to be in a cut that isn’t too revealing nor too adorable. For example, a sleeveless gown can be made appropriate by choosing the same style but with sleeves/spaghetti straps, or adding a pretty bolero jacket. Plunging necklines are never appropriate, and the same thing goes for high slits.

If the cut is suitable, you can also choose a different color, like a soft pink. However, as long as the color matches the rest of the wedding dresses, it can be just about anything.

Some designers, such as Forever Yours, Alfred Angelo and Jordan, offer Junior sizes on all or some of their bridesmaid dresses. Just look at the sizing options or the sizing charts visible lower down on a specific dress’s page.

To find our selection of junior bridesmaid dresses online, simply click the link or do a search. Prices range from under $100.

Long Sleeve Wedding Dresses

August 27th, 2010

Browse through the hundreds of wedding gowns available at any bridal shop, and you’ll notice that an overwhelming majority are sleeveless or with delicate spaghetti straps. Shoulder-baring dresses are extremely popular, but they just aren’t for you. Here are some reasons for preferring a long sleeve wedding gown:

  • Your wedding may be scheduled in fall or winter, when the extra warmth of sleeves will be needed, especially if you’re going to get some photos taken outside!
  • You don’t like the look of your arms and prefer to hide them.
  • Bare shoulders and arms are too risque, especially because of your background.
  • Your wedding will be very formal, and sleeveless dresses look too casual.

Types of Long Sleeves
Long sleeves refers only to the length, and there are a number of shapes that are available.

Fitted Sleeves
The sleeves are tailored to fit snugly to the contours of your arms.

Leg of Mutton Sleeves
Sleeves that are loose and puffy from the shoulder to the elbow, then fit snugly for the rest of the length to the wrist. Very Victorian!

Juliet Sleeves
Similar to Leg of Mutton sleeves, but only the very top part of the sleeve, at the shoulders, is puffy. Another classical style.

Three Quarter Sleeves
This is considered “long” since it goes past the elbow, but ends inches above the wrist, in the middle of the forearm. A good compromise, don’t you think? Three quarter refers to the length, rather than the style.

Anna Paquin’s Halter Wedding Dress

David Tutera Halter Wedding Dress Style Marilyn with Bead Detail

This weekend, True Blood actors Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer got married. And what do we only care about? Her wedding dress, of course!

According to reports and the accompanying grainy pics, Anna Paquin wore a fairly simple white dress with a halter neck and sweetheart neckline, a la Marilyn Monroe. The dress fell below her knees at 3/4 length and appears to have an outer layer of chiffon or other lightweight gauzy material. On her feet were chunkier platforms-black heels, to be exact. To show off her bared back, she styled her hair in a neat updo.

Paquin certainly broke away from the trend of bigger, ballroom-style strapless dresses that other celebrities wore this year, namely Carrie Underwood, Chelsea Clinton and Hilary Duff. Her dress was shorter and less extravagant, but just as beautiful and perfectly suited to the outdoor venue.

Halter Wedding Dress and Your Body Type

Halter dresses are great for most body types. They provide adequate support and lift if you’ve got a larger chest and give the illusion of more balance if you’re smaller up top, especially with sweetheart necklines and fuller skirts. Because they highlight the neck, decollete and shoulders, they’re also perfect for those who want to show off the area. On the contrary, you may want to wear something else if you’ve got wider shoulders.

Part of what makes halter dresses so sexy is that your upper back is left bare. A fabulous choice for summer and early fall weddings!

10 Signs of Quality in Wedding Gowns

August 20th, 2010

If you don’t have a fortune to spend on your wedding gown, simply choose something within your budget and less expensive. But just because your gown is cheap, it doesn’t have to look it, too. Look for signs of quality craftsmanship in particular features of the gown.

Zippers
There’s nothing more infuriating than a zipper that sticks and won’t close properly. A good quality zipper is a must for any wedding gown. Make sure it closes smoothly. It’s also recommended that the zipper be hidden.

alfred angelo wedding dress

Alfred Angelo Wedding Dress 2101

Buttons
Just like zippers, buttons are another feature that should function flawlessly. Each button should be securely fastened to the dress, firmly in place and not hanging on by a couple of stitches. Every buttonhole should be finished with good binding, so that they’re not just cuts in the fabric. Avoid buttons that are simply added as decoration and have no function, like one placed at the top of a zipper. This will clutter the dress.

Seams
All seams should be even and well formed. If there are any problem with the seams, don’t get it-unless you ask for a discount and get them repaired asap.

Take a careful look inside the dress. Look carefully for raw seams. Raw seams, as opposed to finished seams, are not as durable and can encourage the fabric of the gown to unravel and fray.

Alfred Angelo Wedding Dress 829a

Crystals and Rhinestones
Crystals and rhinestones should be placed precisely on the gown, securely fastened with tight stitching. Each should be clear, to get that full sparkly effect.

Look for these things in bridesmaid gowns, flowergirl dresses and Quinceanera dresses, too!

Wedding Dress Trains

August 18th, 2010
casablanca wedding dress 1892

Casablanca Wedding Dress Style 1892 with Semi-Chapel Train

A fashion designer in Malaysia recently made the headlines for designing her own wedding dress, with a train measuring 85 meters long and 10 flower girls to help her out!

S. Revathi made her record breaking dress, taking 2 months to create. And it was so long that dealing with it caused a delay in the wedding service.

The previous record held in the country was only, ahem, 35 meters. However, Revathi’s train pales in comparison to the record breaking trains of other wedding dresses around the world. We’re talking about a bride from China a few years ago whose train measured over 2000 meters!

Unless you’re hoping to top these records, there’s no need to have a train measuring that long. It would be a nuisance to deal with it on your special day, not to mention being pretty costly. Brides generally prefer trains that are far shorter in length. It’s a good idea to consider where you’re going to be getting married when deciding on length. Generally, if you’re getting married in a cathedral, you can afford to have a much longer train than if the venue is a small church simply because there’s more space. Getting married outdoors? A long train may just get dirty while it drags along the ground. Consider your height, as well, since petite frames may just get swamped by all that fabric.

Organza Wedding Dresses

What’s hot? Apparently, with Chelsea Clinton’s wedding gown still setting tongues a wagging, the hottest thing in wedding gowns right now is organza.

enzoani organza wedding dress

Impression Organza Wedding Dress Style 3005

Organza is an airy fabric that is sheer, matte and delicate. It may be in one or more colors, matte or sparkly, and plain or embroidered. Obviously, the most common color for wedding dresses is white or any variation of it. It can be woven entirely from synthetic materials, namely polyester, and/or natural materials, namely silk. Organza tends to be stiffer than other transparent fabrics like chiffon, which is the main difference between the two, and it’s this stiffer quality that is prized since it does wonders for structured gowns, especially as the outer layers to form a full bodied skirt-without appearing too rigid and unyielding.

Just look at the structured, yet dreamy quality of Chelsea Clinton’s wedding dress and you’ll understand what we mean. Those ruffles are all thanks to silk organza! But with a pricetag reported to be at around $20,000, we’ve got over 700 dresses featuring this fabric that are more reasonably priced.

5 Tips To Spending Less On Your Bridal Gown

August 13th, 2010

woman opening wallet to get money

Unless you have a reported $3million budget for your wedding like Chelsea Clinton, who forked over about $25,000 for her bridal gown, you probably will need these helpful tips to keep the price of your dress down.

1. More material and “stuff” usually, but not always, means more money. That A-line wedding dress with intricate detailing composed of beading and sequins, a full skirt and detachable train will probably be much more expensive than a simpler gown with a slimmer shape. You may also want to skip the train or get something with less embroidery or other handwork.

Angelina Faccenda Wedding Dress 1042

2. Silk, although luxurious, tends to be quite pricey. If you have a restrictive budget, check out the gowns made from synthetic fabric instead. Look for higher quality satin that is based on polyester. Polyester does not wrinkle as easily but it doesn’t breathe as well.

3. Choose a dress with little or no lace, since it can really jack up the price.

4. Bridal gowns that are two pieces tend to be less expensive to alter than those that are one solid piece. A two pieces dress may also fit better. A good tip to remember since chances are, you’ll need to get your dress altered at some point.

5. Look for deals and offers. We always offer some kind of special pricing, sale or giveaway to add value to your purchase. For example, we offer free shipping if you’re in the US and our prices are always lower than the original. We also give you a pair of shoes and a veil absolutely free when you buy a dress from a select designer.

Petite Lengths on Wedding Dresses

August 11th, 2010
maggie sottero petite length wedding dress

Maggie Sottero Bailey J1373 Wedding Dress in Diamond White

The average height of women in the country is between 5’3″ to 5’4″, which means most of us fall under the petite category. But you wouldn’t get that impression by looking at fashion catalogs. The majority of models are statuesque, towering at heights that are generally far higher than the average woman.

alfredangelopetite

Alfred Angelo Wedding Gown Style 2119 in Diamond White

Do you find it difficult to shop for wedding dresses, and clothes in general, because you find that all of the lengths are too long? Do you always have to hem the bottom? Need to wear stilettos all the time to add a couple of inches? If you do, just find a designer that offers “petite” lengths.

Petite Length
Wedding gown designers like Maggie Sottero and Alfred Angelo offer petite length. This means that the bottom of the wedding dress is shorter in length than the “regular” size, so you won’t be constantly stepping and tripping on it if it’s designed to be full length and gracing the floor. Petite lengths may or may not be offered for an additional fee; check with the designer.

It’s good news for brides under 5’4″. You no longer need to wear a heel over 2 inches, since the dress will most likely fit to a T. However, if you’re around 5’4″ and are planning to wear a heel higher than 2 inches, it’s best to go with the regular length. The worst thing you could do is to get something too short. If in doubt, always go longer, as you can always get it hemmed.

Color of the Year: Blue

August 9th, 2010

Are you a fashionista who’s always on the cusp of the hottest trends? Here’s a news alert just for you: this summer, the hottest color is blue. Wedgwood blue, that is. You know the shade we’re talking about. Think fine China and those delicate porcelain dishes your grandmother cherishes. Wedgwood blue is a softer, powdery shade that most wedding gowns may not be offered in, but certainly come in viable alternatives. Pastel or light blue will suffice, and of course, turquoise.

But let’s be honest. Wedgwood blue, or any soft blue for that matter, doesn’t look great on everyone. It can make fairer skin tones look washed out and darker skin tones look tacky. So, if you like the color but would rather have something different for the dress, then by all means go for it. Instead of wearing all blue, do something like this:

get blue trim or detailing
decorate with blue flowers, like hydrangeas
dye your shoes blue
have a blue cake
choose a blue dress for the reception.

Here are some bridal dresses that we offer featuring this hot new shade:

Bridal Shoes: The Perfect Fit

August 6th, 2010

Free shoes with every wedding gown purchase
If you’re like me, you’ll probably spend as much time looking for the perfect wedding shoes as you do the dress. And when it comes to shoes, it’s all about three things: comfort, style and color.

Comfort

You’ll probably be on your feet for most of your wedding day, which means comfort is incredibly important. Don’t let a tight pair of shoes that cause blisters and chafed ankles ruin your day. Another good idea is to not buy heels that are too high, unless you know how to walk in them. Keep your shoes on for extended periods of time, at the shop and at home. Breaking them in this way can prevent problems that can cause you to hobble down the aisle or on the dance floor.

Color

Most wedding dresses are white, or a variation of it, and the same is true for shoes to match. But that doesn’t mean that white is the only color you can choose! There is a rainbow of colors to choose from, and as long as they look good with the dress, then who cares if they’re white or not?

The perfect shoes, but not the right color? No problem! The shoe store or your local cobbler may be able to dye the shoes to your preference. Fortunately, most wedding shoes are fabric so that’ll be pretty easy to do. If you want to match the color of your dress, it’s best to find shoes of the same fabric, since the dye will take to achieve the same result as the dress.

Style
Closed or open toed, slingback, pumps, ballet flats or strappy sandals…which style to choose from? We

ll, it’s all up to you! As long as the style is as formal as the dress, you can choose whatever you want. There’s no need to stick with pumps, the traditional choice for wedding shoes, unless you want to!

Consider the following when deciding the style:

  • The weather or season. Closed toe pumps are great for colder weather, while strappy sandals are great for the summer.
  • How formal your wedding will be. You could probably get away with wearing flip flops if you’re having a beach wedding!
  • Your personal preference.

Shopping Tip for color and style: Because you probably won’t be hauling around your dress while you’re shoe shopping, take a photo and swatch of your wedding dress to make the experience easier. And make sure to keep the receipt, since they might not look as good as they did in the shop!

Wedding Dress Lingo: Dress Cuts

August 4th, 2010

You’ll hear a lot of weird words when you look for your wedding dress. Be in the know: learn the language to make your shopping experience easier.

There are a multitude of bridal dress cuts, and here’s the list:

a-line wedding dress

A-Line or Princess: This cut compliments just about every kind of figure, from pears to apples. With a slight flare in the skirt that generally begins at the waist (but can also start higher up, near the shoulders), it hides problem areas below and gives the illusion of a slimmer waist. This cut can make any bride feel like a princess!

Empire waist wedding dress

Empire waist: Very flattering on petite women or those with a smaller chest size, empire waists are waistlines that fall right below the bust, with the rest of the dress being straight or slightly flared. This cut accentuates the top, giving you the appearance of a larger bust, and the illusion of height. It’s also great for women who are pear shaped.

ball gown wedding dress

Ball Gown: With a fitted bodice and full skirt gracing the floor, the Ball Gown will make you feel like dancing!

basque waist wedding gown

Basque Waist: With a dipped waistline that starts at your own waist or just below it, forming the shape of a U or V, the Basque waist is best on those with a larger bust since the fitted bodice top provides great support. It gives the illusion of narrower hips and a longer waist.

sheath wedding gown

Sheath: If you’ve got the body, flaunt it! The sheath cut hugs your body, highlighting your curves in usually a lighter fabric. This cut usually also features a detachable train, making it a great dress for the service and the reception. Great for hourglass figures.

trumpet wedding dress

Mermaid, Fishtail or Trumpet: This cut is very similar to a sheath, but is almost always long, covering the entire leg. The top is fitted and a flair exists just below the knee.

Getting the Right Measurements for Bridesmaid Dresses

August 2nd, 2010

You may think that it’s difficult to get the right sizes for all of your bridesmaid dresses, but it’s not at all! What it all comes down to is getting the measurements for the bust, waist and hip of each of your bridesmaids.

To accurately measure the bridesmaids at your wedding, use a cloth measuring tape. Cloth (or soft plastic) yields to the body’s curves, allowing for a measurement that’s more accurate. Start with the bust. You want to measure the fullest part of the bust, which right across the nipple. Then, do the waist, placing the tape about an inch above the belly button. The waist measurement should be where your waist is narrowest. Finally, measure the hips, at the widest part.

Once these measurements have been taken, you’re ready to find the perfect size for your bridesmaids’ dresses by comparing them to a Bridesmaid dress size chart. You can let them choose the dress, or to save yourself the headache, just choose them yourself. After all, it is your wedding and you know what you like and dislike! You can always get feedback from everyone, but the final decision should
ultimately be yours. And a tip: to please all of your bridesmaids, you may want to choose an A-Line cut since it compliments most figures.

Sleeveless, sleek, tea length or shorter; whatever you decide on, just make sure to make your decision for everyone’s dress, including yours, early on in the planning stage since it can take several weeks to have your order made. Because there will be so many people to please, alterations will probably be necessary, and you don’t want to be doing them days before the wedding.

Wedding Dresses For Your Body Type

July 28th, 2010

There are thousands of wedding dress designs out there, and new styles are constantly being introduced to the market. With so much selection, it’s no wonder that soon-to-be-brides take months shopping around. After all, it is one of the biggest and most important days of a woman’s life!

So what’s the most important factor to consider when choosing a wedding dress for yourself? Your body type!

That’s right: the perfect dress is the one that flatters your body, downplaying your flaws and highlighting your strengths.

Apple Body Type
If you’ve got a body that’s larger up top than below, then you’re an apple. Apple body types tend to have a fuller face and chest, with narrow hips and shapely legs. Think Tyra Banks.

The Perfect Dress: It’s all about the top portion of the dress for apples. Choose something that is fitted to accentuate your upper body, but don’t pick something that’s too tight. Detail that makes the eye move, like elaborate designs featuring sequins, pearls and lace works well. Since you’ve got the chest for it, a v-neck or something that points downward to an empire waist will make you look slimmer up top. As for the skirt, stick with plainer A-lines.

Pear Body Type
The opposite of apples, pears are heavier on the bottom than up top. What you lack in the breast department you make up for below the waist, with curvy hips and a full bottom. Think Jennifer Lopez.

The Perfect Dress: No body hugging gowns or puffy skirts allowed! Stick to halter tops with a vast array of necklines (from v-necked to scooped and even squared), empire waists and A-line skirts. To look fuller up top, choose something with intricate detailing while keeping the skirt plainer.

Ruler Body Type
You may not be as curvy as you wished you were, but you do have a balanced body that features longer legs and arms and a back to die for. Think Gwyneth Paltrow.

The Perfect Dress: Show off those fabulous shoulders with spaghetti straps or sleeveless tops and opt for a cinched waist with ribbon or other embellishment to help you look curvier.

Hourglass Body Type
You’ve got the curves! Everything up top balances out with everything down below, giving you the hourglass shape that many of us picture as most feminine. Think Salma Hayek.

The Perfect Dress: With curves like that, your only choice is to play them up. You’re lucky enough to be able to choose just about any dress, since most will look good on you. But if you must have some kind of guideline, choose scooped necklines and butterfly cuts, and avoid anything that doesn’t accentuate your curves.

Shopping tip: You won’t be standing still on your wedding day, so remember to move around in the dress when you’re trying it on as well. You may find that it may not look as nice (or look even nicer!)
