5 Dressing Tips For Plus Size Mothers Dresses
March 28th, 2011
Images by Forever Yours Mothers Dress - Style 811105 Strapless A-line dress with trumpet bottom. Pleats on the waist and bust. Matching three quarter sleeve bolero included
For full figured mothers, look for these features in a dress to wear at your daughter’s or son’s wedding:
1. Unless you don’t mind showing off your curves, avoid clingy dresses that reveal every bulge on your body. They can be uncomfortable, difficult to move in and unflattering. Find a dress that is looser and either flows around the body or is fitted. It doesn’t have to be chiffon – stiffer fabrics like taffeta look great, too. The best combination is to wear a fitted bodice with a flowing skirt.
2. Choose the right undergarments. Visible panty lines and darker colored bras peeking through lighter dresses are always a definite fashion faux pas. Nude colored lingerie will prevent this problem. You can even try wearing control-top hose to add a bit of support where it’s needed.
3. Unless you want to highlight an area on your body, dresses that are all one color usually appear more slimming.
4. Add a wrap or shawl. Did you see the gorgeous outfit Hillary Clinton wore when her daughter Chelsea got married? The wrap completed her dress, acting as an elegant and practical accessory. Wraps and shawls allow you to wear a fashionable strapless dress, but provide additional coverage for the upper arms (a common problem area for plus size women).
5. Wear it with pride. Once you’ve gotten all dressed up for the big day, put your game face on – self confidence and a positive attitude is way more important that what you’re wearing!
Quinceanera Dresses
February 22nd, 2011What’s so nice about Quinceanera dresses? A lot!
If you’re lucky to be celebrating your Quinceanera, you’re in for a fantastic day devoted all to you. Everyone will be paying attention to you on the day, and it’s time to really work the spotlight by looking gorgeous. The perfect dress for you is out there, and it’s bound to make you feel like the princess you are.

House of Wu Quinceanera Dress - Style 26667 Strapless gown with dramatic fabric detail at bodice and gown accent by beautiful appliques. Tiered skirt with lace-up back. Sparkle Organza.
Go All Out – Wear a Ballroom Gown
The ballroom is the most popular style for Quinceanera dresses and is quite formal in appearance. The fitted bodice and full length voluminous skirt with layers and layers of gorgeous fabric – add a few fancy embellishments to make it extra special, and there’s no other style that makes you feel more like a princess.
No wonder we have over 400 Quinceanera dresses that are in a ballroom cut! They are incredibly popular no matter what time of year it is. Wear a ballroom for winter or summer; it doesn’t matter.

Q by Da Vinci Quinceanera Dress - Style 2535 Rouched tulle bodice with crisscross keyhole halter neckline, corset style enhanced with direct beading and lace-up back. Full taffeta skirt with pleated tiers and gathered drape. Includes matching shawl and purse.
Strapless or Sleeves?
Strapless reigns supreme for this special birthday party, but don’t feel like you have to wear one if you don’t want to. Sometimes, a strapless dress is a little too revealing and may not be appropriate for the occasion or where you’ll be having your party. There are plenty of other dresses with cap sleeves, short sleeves and full length instead. There are even halters, which aren’t really strapless but bare enough shoulder that it almost seems like it. Halters are hot and add a sophisticated touch. They highlight the shoulder area, which is great if you’ve got a sculpted upper body.
Flower Girl Dresses For Older Girls
February 17th, 2011
Tiffany Flower Girl Dress - Style 13232 Thick spaghetti strapped, V-necked, Lame ball gown. Features a pickup skirt.
Is your flower girl a little older than the norm? The usual age for a flower girl is anywhere between four to eight years old. This is a general age range, and many weddings may have flower girls outside of it, either younger than four or older than eight. There’s no definite rule governing them, so it’s really up to you as the bride. Maybe you have a niece that really wants to take part in your wedding and wants to fill this role. Perhaps the daughter of your matron of honor, also your BFF, would be ecstatic to carry flowers for you. Or it could be possible that your own daughter just wants to do it. Whatever the reason, a girl who’s older than 8 and doesn’t want to be a junior bridesmaid is welcome to be a flower girl – after all, all eyes will be on her as she walks down the aisle before you do, and she’ll most likely be the only one so she won’t have to share the spotlight! It’s a coveted position, no doubt.

Watters Flower Girl Dress - Style 49207 Praline Soft Satin dress with draped body, thick straps and mocha satin ribbon at waist
The only thing you have to be concerned about in this situation, then, is to help your helper find a dress that’s right for her. You can’t go too cutesy, since she’ll be too old for that, and
you can’t go too mature or risque, since she’ll be too young for that. The flower girl dress you need to find will have to be middle ground, with elegance and femininity that’s not overstated but just perfect for her age. A suitable dress would be fashionable and keep in mind the current trends of the season, since they are at an impressionable age. The two dresses shown here are examples of what would be appropriate for older flower girls.

Valentines Day Wedding Dress
February 10th, 2011
Mia Solano Wedding Dress - Style M1140L Strapless A-line Taffeta featuring asymmetrical pleated bodice with beautiful jeweled detail under the bust line and base of the train. Chapel length train, lace-up back.
This Monday is Valentine’s Day, the most romantic day of the year. Apparently, over 2 million people will pop the question on February 14, which means a whole lot of weddings are going to be happening after next week. On top of this, Valentine’s Day is also one of the most popular days to get married, and even though it falls on a weekday this year, we’re sure many, many people will be taking the day off just to get hitched.
So where is the most popular destination for weddings on Valentine’s Day, you ask? Well, it can only be Las Vegas, Nevada, where they’ve made getting married an art. The thriving city receives an influx of couples every year who are already engaged and just want to make it official.
If you’re planning to get married on Valentine’s Day, keep in mind that many other couples will also be planning to do the exact same thing. This means you’ll need to book way in advance for photographers, florists, caterers, stylists, and other professionals you require to make your wedding fabulous. Ordering your Valentine’s Day wedding dresses way in advance is also extremely important, and to celebrate the inherit romance of the day, how about spicing it up a bit with a glamorous red number like the one shown here? We find red wedding dresses to be totally appropriate for the day as well as “traditional” (white is good on the other days, but red is just fine on Feb. 14).
Beach Wedding Dresses From Maggie Sottero
February 7th, 2011
Maggie Sottero Destinations Beach Wedding Dress - Style JD1315 Slim line with zipper over inner corset and self-covered button closure. Gossamer Chiffon features shirring throughout the bodice with beaded embellishments beaming at the empire line. A detachable Watteau train elegantly streams the length of the gown.
You’re having a destination wedding at the beach, but you don’t want to go casual. Dress up in one of many beautiful beach wedding dresses that won’t be mistaken as anything else but! Destinations by Maggie Sottero is a great line of beach wedding dresses that allow you to capture all the formality of an indoor wedding, but outdoors.

Maggie Sottero Destinations Beach Wedding Dress - Style JD1386 Strapless, A-line with corset closure in Organza. Features an innovative notched neckline and heavily ruched bodice accented at the natural waist with a detachable band and softly embellished, handmade flowers. The A-line skirt flaunts plentiful tiers of gathered ruffles and finishes with our signature back corset closure.
Destinations by Maggie Sottero is a collection of dresses that are more formal than regular beach wedding gowns that most other designers offer. The real difference with Maggie Sottero lie in the following:
- The fabrics used are higher quality, with light and frothy chiffon and luxurious organza taking the spotlight.
- Silhouettes are sleeker than styles for other venues, making these dresses more practical for the outdoors (no voluminous ball gowns that are hard to move around in).
- Skirts are short to long – it’s your choice!
- Elements of the dress are inspired by nature, but still maintain their elegance and sophistication. In fact, some of the dresses in the collection can easily be worn indoors without any problem. You’ll still look gorgeous and not out of place.
To make your Maggie Sottero beach wedding dress look really dressed up, but still “beachy”, focus on the accessories. Slip on a pair of bejewelled gladiators (like Alicia Keys!), add a glitzy headpiece or wear jewelry that is inspired by your surroundings (think anything nautical or featuring leaves, flowers and animals). This will make the statement that yes, you are getting married on the beach, but no, it’s definitely not casual.

And you don’t want them to have to spend so much money, so it has to be cheap bridesmaid dresses on top of that. Here are some features that look great on any body type:

Five Fabulous Hairstyles for Backless Bridesmaid Dresses
January 30th, 2011
Forever Yours Backless Bridesmaid Dresses - Style 710219 Taffeta tea length dress with pockets and ruffled neckline with gathered waistband
You’ve chosen gorgeous backless bridesmaid dresses for your bridesmaids. You know, it’s a little on the risque side, but your fashionista friends all love what you’ve selected because they’re stylish and oh-so feminine. Now it’s time to figure out some hairstyles.
There are plenty of fabulous hairstyles that work with backless dresses, whether they’re bridesmaid or wedding dresses. Most styles keep the back bare by putting medium or long hair up, while short hair is styled to compliment the femininity of the dress. Here are 5 of the most popular:
1. For short hair, try pin curls for old-school glam. You’ll have to use a lot of styling products to keep those curls going, but it’ll be totally worth it.
2. For medium length hair that’s thick, try voluminous curls and fat waves. Curl the hair with an iron, then release and fluff them out a bit for instant wow. The back remains bare since curling the hair shortens it.

Bonny Backless Bridesmaid Dress - Style 7037 Strapless empire with soft pleating crisscrossing from the neckline. The back is finished with an inset of overlapping layers creating the sweep train.
3. For medium length to long hair of any texture, try a classic french twist. There’s no need to keep it slicked back and totally neat either. A little messiness makes it flirty.
4. For medium length to long hair, try a loose bun tied off to the side. It’s a modern take on the classic.
5. For long hair, try sweeping you hair to one side for a diehard romantic look. The only thing you’ll have to worry about is keeping it on the side, away from your face. A few strategically placed bobby pins can help.
Five Trends for Mothers Dresses
January 27th, 2011Just because your daughter or son is getting married, it doesn’t mean all the attention will be focused on them. As the mother, you’ll be in the spotlight, too, which means that you’ll have to look great for their special day. As fashionable as you are, you’ll need to know this year’s trends in Mother’s dresses.
The Color of the Season
What’s the hottest color right now? Rather, a better question to ask is, when is the wedding? Choosing a mother’s dress in the color of the season makes a statement: you are on the pulse of fashion. Stick to pastels in warmer weather and deeper shades in the fall and winter. There’s absolutely no reason why you have to stick to the usual beige. Just choose what flatters your skin tone, and doesn’t clash with the wedding dress.
Lace
The bride isn’t the only one who can wear lace at a wedding. Lace is a gorgeous fabric that is suitable for any member of the wedding party, but will probably look best on you and the bride. It is elegant and a tribute to all things romantic.
Dress How Old You Feel You Are
Mother’s dresses tend to be dominated by shapeless forms that have no sense of today’s current fashions. Don’t restrict yourself to an outfit that will age you beyond your years. Just look at what Hillary Clinton wore when Chelsea got married this summer! Hillary’s mother’s dress was a sweet, fuchsia ballroom gown with a sweetheart neckline, something totally different from the usual unappealing outfits that unfortunately, mothers have to resign themselves to.
Shorter Lengths
More than ever, women are defying the test of time. They’re keeping in shape, and want to show off their hard work. Like the title to Diahann Carroll’s autobiography, the legs are the last to go, so it’s time to show them off. Cocktail lengths, tea lengths and if you dare, mini’s show everyone that just because you’re a mother, it doesn’t mean that you still can’t make a statement-and show off your shoes!
3 Bridesmaid Dresses You Can Wear Again and Again
January 24th, 2011Let’s face it, ladies. Most of us who are bridesmaids will be shelling out more bucks than usual on a dress that we’ll only be wearing once. Bridesmaid dresses have a bad reputation for being somewhat pricey (depending on where you shop, of course) and too wedding-ish unless, that is, you’re lucky. You may be blessed being the bridesmaid for a bride who has great taste and understands that you want to wear that dress again, because it’s gorgeous, makes you look gorgeous, and just needs to be worn again.
Sound familiar? If you have any say in the kind of bridesmaid dress you’ll be wearing at the wedding, how about choosing one of these styles? Each is from the latest collection (Spring 2011) of a hot designer in the bridal industry. Depending on the gown, they can be worn to a formal, semi-formal, dinner party or even to work – it all depends on how you dress it up or down. You won’t want to put any of these bridesmaid dresses in the back of your closet or pack them away into storage; these dresses scream “wear me again!” (lucky you, now if only we could work on the wearability factor for wedding dresses…)
Dress this up with an updo and some bling for a semi-formal, or add a cute jacket and keep it simple for work at the office.

Purely Alfred Angelo Bridesmaid Dress - Style 7152 Scoop neck silk crinkle chiffon cocktail length dress
This gorgeous dress is ideal for formals and semi-formals.

Mori Lee Bridesmaid Dress - Style 291 Strapless floor length chiffon dress with a removable flower, a drop waist and tiered skirt
The material and embellishment on the bodice makes this dress best for future formal occasions.
Designer Bridesmaid Dress Spotlight: Bari Jay
January 20th, 2011Designer Bari Jay is synonymous with elegance, quality in craftsmanship and fashionable, all at great value. For over three decades, Bari Jay has been designing and manufacturing gorgeous designer wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses for women around the world. The label is so well known and respected that the company has even received a DEBI, an award given to companies in the bridal industry that recognize “distinctive excellence in the bridal industry”.
Kristine Eikenbary is currently the head designer at Bari Jay. She has created some gorgeous bridesmaid dresses. Here are just a couple:

Bari Jay Bridesmaid Dress - Style 380 Bella Chifon and Charmuese trim. One shoulder, pleated dress with beaded trim. Shown in Shadow.
The essence of her designs lies in the ability to capture all that is feminine, and portray this in a confident and alluring way. Fabrics enhance the gentle contours of the female form, flattering its curves without highlighting problem areas. You’ll find many Bari Jay Bridesmaid Dresses to have either a cinched waist (usually that’s starts higher up) to give the illusion of an hour glass figure, or an empire waist to hide a heavier lower body and add more oomph in the chest area. These dresses were designed for real women!
But what’s the best thing about Bari Jay Designer Bridesmaid Dresses? The bridesmaid can wear it for any other formal or even semi-formal occasion. Choose the right color (usually the bride makes the selection, as well as the type of fabric), and these dresses are incredibly wearable no matter what the event. Long dresses may even be shortened by an expert tailor to create a perfectly cute tea-length or cocktail-length dress.
Getting the Right Fit In Wedding Dresses
January 17th, 2011
Checking out wedding dresses but have a few pounds that you’d like to shed before the big day? Many brides struggle in the final weeks and months, trying to lose weight and keep it off so they’ll be able to fit into their perfect dress – a dress that was ordered in the bride’s ideal size, and not their real one. Unfortunately, it’s typical that the size is simply too small, and no matter how much dieting and exercising they do, they just can’t fit into it. So what happens? That perfect dress is left to collect dust in the closet while the bride has to make a frantic dash to a bridal store, hoping to find a replacement that is as good. This wastes precious time and tends to be incredibly expensive, since the bride can’t make an economical decision with only moments to spare. A load of money is spent on a dress that probably won’t be as nice as the one hanging in the closet.
Don’t fall into this trap!
Never, ever order a dress in a size you hope to be by the wedding day. Always order it in the size that you are at the time you buy it. You may be committed to your diet, but there’s no way to know if you’ll actually be able to drop the weight, since as we all know, life gets in the way. It’s much easier for a tailor to take a dress in if you do lose the weight. On the other hand, the tailor might not be able to do anything at all to let it out, so play it safe and order your size, not the one you hope to be. And don’t forget to make an appointment with your tailor as soon as you get your dress (or even before if you know the exact time it’ll arrive). Sometimes, it takes ages to book a good tailor, and more than one appointment may be needed.
Once you’ve gone for a fitting and had all of the adjustments done, try to maintain your weight so that there aren’t any unexpected adjustments required.
Wedding Dresses Fabric: Duchess Satin
January 13th, 2011
Watters & Watters Wedding Dress - Style Cheer 5083B Eggshell strapless duchess silk satin gown with draped bodice, bustled skirt and self covered buttons to bottom of dropped waist. Sweep train.
Silk has always been the most popular choice for wedding dresses, and bridal wear in general, because of its luxurious texture and light feel. However, it is most prone to wrinkling as well, which means brides must wear it with the utmost care
Rather than silk, how about opting for another equally luxurious fabric: duchess satin. Duchess satin is is as rich and elegant as silk (with a similar price tag to boot!), but tends to be thicker, crisper and can withstand creasing much better, mainly due to having a higher thread count. Although Duchess satin may be woven from silk fibers only, synthetic materials such as polyester and rayon may also be added. This fabric has the ability to hold its shape without being too heavy, which is incredibly important if you don’t want to look disheveled on the biggest day of your life. No wonder it’s frequently used for couture wedding dresses. Duchess satin has also been around since ancient China, where it was invented, and we all know how gorgeous the fabrics of those dresses were.
Because of the fine quality of Duchess satin, wedding dresses made from this material tend to be pricier. You’ll find that styles tend to be simpler with little embellishment to highlight the sheer beauty of the fabric alone.
Wedding Dresses Trivia
January 10th, 2011Here’s a bit of trivia about wedding dresses in Western culture:
Generally, wedding dresses are an incredibly important part of the wedding service. They allow the bride to feel like a princess and are often cherished, kept by the family as an heirloom to be passed down to future generations. A bride’s dress represents a new beginning in one’s life, and is most likely more valued than the groom’s tux (because, after all, we do tend to focus more on the bride than the groom).
But the bride’s act of wearing a different, more elaborate wedding gown in the Western world only became a common after the 1880s. Before that time, all the females in the wedding party actually wore the same dress. The bride and bridesmaids all wore a dress with the exact same cut, style and color to confuse and ward off any evil forces that wanted to wreak havoc at the ceremony.
After the 1880s, this custom was abandoned. More focus was placed on the bride, and her dress became more distinct from and increasingly fancier than the bridesmaids and other attendants. Could this change have been a result of Queen Victoria’s elaborate white dress back in 1840?
Regardless, we love that wedding gowns have become what they are now. There’s no other occasion that celebrates women and how alluring they can be than at a wedding!
