Designer, Betsey Johnson made her mark in the world of fashion during the late 1970s with her offbeat punk rock designs and slightly wacky but wonderful style. Her avant-garde style got her recognized at an early age and she was able to launch her career in fashion shortly after graduating magna cum laude from Syracuse University.
After graduating from college, Johnson made her first stride in the New York fashion industry after winning Mademoiselle Magazine's Guest Editor Contest and earning a position with the magazine's art department. Johnson's keen eye for artistic couture got her noticed by designer Mary Quant and artist Andy Warhol. Together, this dynamic team helped pioneer what became known as the "Youthquake" movement in fashion, art and culture drawing inspiration from the fashion scene in London.
In 1978, Johnson partnered with ex-model Chantal Bacon to start their own company, the Betsey Johnson label. The two opened their first boutique in SoHo, New York. The Betsey Johnson brand has grown immensely since its birth in New York. The company currently has 65 stores worldwide, including locations in London, Toronto and Tokyo.
